Over 5.5 million caregivers in America provide support to an injured, ill, or wounded service member or veteran. Among that number are many people who care for those with psychological and cognitive injuries obtained during military deployment. As a caregiver to a veteran diagnosed with multiple physical, cognitive, and mental conditions that include severe and Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury, I am among that number.

Many organizations are involved in addressing the needs of caregivers through evidence-based practice and practice-based research, such as The Elizabeth Dole Foundation (EDF)The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and The American Congress of Rehabilitative Medicine (ACRM). ACRM is a non-profit and professional association that is involved in improving the lives of disabled people. On November 3-8, ACRM will host experts in areas that are related to multiple fields, to include Military & Veteran Affairs, Brain Injury, and Geriatric Rehabilitation, for its 96th annual international conference in Chicago, IL. This is an interdisciplinary conference for the whole rehab team, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers. Specialists in Research, Neuroscience, Neuroplasticity, Technology, and Limb Restoration, to name a few, will also be in attendance.

I am honored to have been selected to present the research findings of my dissertation study at this conference. My study, “Elearning for Military Caregivers of Individuals With PTSD, TBI, Depression, and Other Related Injuries,” addresses the problem of the need for education and training for military caregivers and further explores whether an ELearning delivery of a curriculum would be useful to military caregivers.

Stay tuned to receive updates on happenings at the conference.
